ACS Awards Forestdale Foster Parent As “Outstanding” At Their Annual Reception Dinner
“Try to be a Rainbow in Someone’s Cloud”- Maya Angelou
The quote above is Mrs. K’s favorite quote, and she has done just that for teens in need since becoming a foster parent at Forestdale. NYC’s Administration for Children’s Services felt the same way and presented Mrs. K with and “Outstanding Foster Parent” award on May 25, 2017.
Mrs. K has been a foster parent since 2015, and recently added four siblings, three of them teens, into her Jamaica home. This would be a challenge for anyone, but Mrs. K and the teens could adjust quickly thanks to the love, stability, and comfort she provides. Her experience as a leader and Youth mentor in her church went a long way to prepare her for the obstacles that can arise in even the most prepared foster home..
Pre-packaged ingredient deliveries make cooking a fun activity for the whole family, with a different child tasked with setting the table every night. This is the way that Mrs. K encourages responsibility and curiosity at the same time The youth are free to explore new hobbies such as cooking. However, homework has to be done right after the meal, and set up and clean up are just as important as sitting down to eat as a family.
Another great aspect of Mrs. K’s foster parenting technique is that she gives the teens a voice in important decisions, like allowing them to negotiate their curfew. She also asks for feedback periodically from the children in her care. This action alone helps the children feel empowered in what can often feel like a powerless situation. But through moments great and small, Mrs. K is providing a safe and loving environment for young people in the foster care system who desperately need her.
